McCain Thrashes, Dems Attrition

Super Tuesday is over. The dust has settled. Amongst the Republicans, McCain has emerged unquestionably as the leader, and the likely nominee. It has been a huge victory for McCain. Romney displayed an embarrassing showing, being upstaged surprisingly by Huckabee in every way. Romney was only able to win one state, and that was the one state he governed, Massachussetts. McCain had a triumphant night, winning the vast majority of states and seizing the lion's share of delegates. He now leads the second place contender, Romney, by more than 300 delegates. It has become clear that there is no concievable way that either Romney or Huckabee can challenge McCain's dominance, as both have split the conservative vote amongst one another. Huckabee has placed himself in the position as a possible running mate of McCain. He has proved strong in the conservative bible belt and in rural America, where McCain's support is lacking. Huckabee now has the merit to claim that he brings a lot to the table.

The epic battle between two historic contenders, Obama and Hillary, continues past Super Tuesday. Hillary claims victories in several huge states, including New York, her home state, California, Massachussetts and New Jersey. Obama, however, has won the clear majority of states, winning 13 of the 22 primaries yesterday. Obama has also gained the most from John Edwards departure from the rest, capturing and increasing his percentage of White voters and displaying surprising strength in the conservative rural regions. Going forward, the momentum is with Obama's camp, who was able to raise over $32 million in January while in comparison, Hillary's camp only raised roughly $13 million. Hillary was able to win the states expected of her, but showed no surprise gains. In fact, Obama has been able to close the gap rapidly in the past week and by keeping the race tight, has already achieved a small victory for his campaign as a challenger. The battle for the Democratic nomination will be close, and it is likely that heading into the convention, it will yet to be settled. Buckle your seatbelts, this is going to be one rough ride!
